To say that Charlotte Motor Speedway has been kind to Jimmie Johnson is an understatement.
As the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs enters the Round of 12, the seven-time Cup Champion enters Sunday’s race at Charlotte as the defending champion at a track where he has won eight times. Johnson, however, will have some work to do if he wants to win his ninth race at the speedway, as he only managed to qualify in the 25th position.
Johnson is not the only playoff driver to have struggled in qualifying. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who was the last driver to qualify for the Round of 12, qualified just ahead of Johnson in the 22nd position. Kyle Larson managed to make the final round of qualifying, but only mustered a time that earned him the 10th starting spot.
