Kyle Busch leads trio of the Championship 4 in the first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice on Friday afternoon. Busch took just seven laps during the session but edged his Toyota teammate Martin Truex Jr. in the closing minutes. Busch’s fastest lap was 172.695 mph, while Truex quickest lap was 172.529 mph. Kevin Harvick finished the session third with his lap speed of 171.865 mph.
Brad Keselowski has some brake issues early in the session and was the slowest of the Championship 4. Keselowski managed just five laps in the 85-minute practice and finished a disappointing 21st with a speed of 168.919 mph.
Rounding out the top five were Kyle Larson at 171.217 mph and Denny Hamlin at 170.854 mph. Dale Earnhardt Jr. completed the session 14th, however early on in practice he had a top-five lap time. Earnhardt was able to complete 12 laps before a burnt piston forced the No. 88 to the garage for an engine change.
