I remember hearing the news of Jim Hunter’s passing last October and walking around the track’s media center and seeing the somber faces.  To put it simply I saw in their eyes that the world of racing had lost one of their most beloved members.  This past weekend the National Motorsports Press Association honored Jim Hunter as the recipient of the NMPA Speedway Motorsports Spirit Award for 2010.  The award was granted to him for his lifelong efforts in support of NASCAR and all involved in the sport.  Over the years Hunter worked as a sportswriter, a public relations director for Darlington Raceway and Talladega Superspeedway.  He later would become track president of Darlington from 1993-2001.  In 2001 Hunter was named vice president of corporate communications for NASCAR.

Hunter also was an advisor to the France family and a friend and well known mentor to countless drivers and members of the media.

Jim Hunter receiving the NMPA Spirit Award is a way wonderful way to honor his memory because the award is designed to recognize character and achievement in the face of adversity, sportsmanship and contributions to motorsports.  Jim Hunter achieved those qualities and much more and I know that we all feel honored that he was a part of our lives.
