Catching up with NASCAR driver David Ragan

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver David Ragan discussed his season, changes with the new aero package and qualifying.

David Ragan, a 13 year veteran in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, talked with Motor Racing Digest at Richmond Raceway. The driver of the No. 38 Ford for Front Row Motorsports discussed his 2019 season so far, the changes under the new aero package and his goal for the rest of the season.

How would you rate your season so far?

I’d say an F. We have underperformed. At about all the tracks we’ve had speed but it hasn’t resulted in good finishes. So I feel like overall as the 38 team we have done a worse job at this point than we did a year ago. So that leaves a lot of room for improvement.

What changes have you seen with the new aero package this year?

The racing at the mile and a half speedways for the rest of the season will be similar to what we’ve had at Texas Motor Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I think the field from front to back is going to continue to tighten up but you’re always going to have the the faster cars that are going to find their way towards the front and the slower cars are going to find their way towards the back.

But the field will be tighter and I think that’s that’s good for the small teams, the industry as a whole, the TV networks and for the fans. I think the racing is better and it’s harder to pass but I do think that it puts on a better show and ultimately NASCAR didn’t want it to be so handicapped to where the guy that runs 40th could go win the race because that that’s not the true intent of motorsports.

I think they’ve got a pretty good balance of where the fast guys are still a little better and I think that’s the way it should be. You don’t want to make it so even as to where the the worst guy here can go win because that that’s not motorsports in its true form.

Would you like to see changes being made to the qualifying format?

The truth doesn’t really matter to me. I’m a think either way the fast cars are still going to be fast and the slow cars are still going to be slow. You can change the process around as much as you’d like and I think it just confuses people. I’m fine if it goes back to single car qualified and I’m fine if it stays the way it does.

What I would really like to see them do, which I think could make for a great show, is do some inversions with the top 10 or top 20. Stuff like that that would make for fun races.

What’s one thing you would like to tell a fan about Front Row Motorsports that they might not know?

Front Row Motorsports is still a young team. I don’t know that there’s a younger team in the garage other than Leavine Family Racing and a couple of the the brand-new teams. You look around and the teams we are battling for position with such as JTG Daugherty Racing, Germain Racing and certainly Richard Petty Motorsports, have all been here longer than us.

We are an extremely young young team and I think that it’s a long, hard, tough process to build a championship contender team and I think we’re right on track. There’s going to be a time I think in the next 10 years where one of those other teams we are competing with won’t be here and Front Row Motorsports will continue to step up and take their place.

I think that we lose that perspective sometimes that Front Row is just a baby compared to some of these these older teams.

What is your goal by the next time we visit Richmond Raceway?

I would like to get some top 20 and top 15 finishes. It’s all about results and we’ve shown speed Friday and even Saturday at times. But on Sunday it’s about the results and at the end of the day we have to get top 20 and top 15 finishes.
