Five NASCAR drivers tested fuel injection for the first time this weekend at Kentucky Speedway. The series has used standard fuel delivery carburetors even though electronic fuel injection has been available in street cars since the 1980’s.
Fuel injection has been rejected by NASCAR because of fear that the team engine specialists could tweak and override the systems and consistency from team to team would be difficult to maintain. Unit manufacturers say they will be tamper-proof. McLaren Electronic Systems and Freescale Semiconductor are developing the systems.
